Where on Google Earth #406

After the completely dry landscape in #405, the next WOGE contains slightly more water, enjoy!

For #405 I was looking at some NE-SW trending mountain ranges in very arid areas like around the Gobi desert and along the ancient silk road, as it was supposed to have historical importance. But at some point I decided to go for lower elevations as many of the asian mountains seem to have snow covered tops. History, wide and dry riverbeds combined with not too high mountains finally guided me to egypt, where it was just a matter of finding the right spot without too much sand in the picture. My guess about a hidden tomb as historic feature turned out to be wrong as it showed roman quarrys where the word porphyry was first used to describe rocks.

  3. Found it: The Volcano island of the Philippines' Taal Lake. The "island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island in the ocean".

I'll be right back with the geology!

The Volcano island is part of the Taal volcano, a (designated) decade (complex) volcano, within the "Pacific Ring of Fire". Is part of a chain of volcanoes along the western side of the edge of the island of Luzon, which were formed by the subduction of the Eurasian Plate underneath the Philippine Mobile Belt, and created large extensive ignimbrite deposits. The last activity (April 9 to July 5, 2011) consisted in increased seismicity, rumbling sounds, inflated volcanic edifice and slight increase in the temperature and CO2 emissions of the lake. The most recent large eruption (VEI=4) was it September 1965. The eruption began with the ejection of basaltic spatter. This was followed by the main phreatic eruption that opened a new crater on the southwest side of Volcano Island. Ash was ejected from the vent to heights as great as 12 miles (20 km).

This WoGE's island consists of different overlapping cones and craters of which forty-seven have been identified. Twenty six of these are tuff cones, five are cinder cones and four are maars. The center of the island is occupied by the Main Crater with a single crater lake formed from the 1911 eruption

Curiosity: when I saw the picture I thought "Pacific!" and immediately gave up "Too many islands (and well spaced) in the Pacific to go look." Today, after a detailed view, I noticed a small island in the lake and then I remembered the "island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island in the ocean" - Islandception
